In Chinese mythology, the tiger and dragon symbolise the yinyang of the Universe. The dragon is a noble creature of good fortune, strong, adventurous and bold. The Green Dragon guards the east gate to the temple, controlling the rain and the spring. It depicts sunrise, earth and life!
After 8 years as an environmental policy adviser in the UK, a public lawyer in the UK government before that, and 8 years as a Green Party councillor in the London Borough of Camden, I have come to live out in Hong Kong.
For as long as I can remember, I have wondered how we are going to save our planet and save ourselves from the hardship and poverty that would flow from destroying the natural resources we depend on. East Asia with its high population density but also its hugely successful economies – the Asian Tigers – and organised cities looks like a good starting point. Lets see if the Green Dragon lives on.
